Advanced Slicer Wizard

Use this option to add slicers to presentations on-the-fly. You can add slicers from any of your datasources. The slicer must be configured in the New Slicer wizard, after which it is added to the presentation slide.

Note: As an alternative to the process described in this topic, you can also create a new slicer from the Interaction Manager, from the New Slicer option in the toolbox, or you can drag an existing slicer onto your canvas from the Content panel.

Add an Advanced Slicer

To add a new slicer to the presentation, go to the Home ribbon and select New Slicer (green highlight below).

The New Slicer wizard opens. You need to configure your new slicer from this panel.

New Slicer wizard

The following describes the options in the New Slicer wizard. You will need to make your configurations and click Apply to create your slicer.

If you have an existing slicer and want to configure its details in the Slicer Settings panel, click here for more information.

Data Source

Choose the data source and slicer hierarchy:

Note: The other tabs (Type, Load Time, and so on) are disabled until you have selected your data source and slicer hierarchy.

Choose Model

Select the data model to connect to.

Select Hierarchy

Choose the hierarchy that will be used to build the slicer.

Elements

Choose the elements that will be included in the slicer. There are three ways to set the slicer's elements:

  • Free Selection: Manually select the hierarchy's member elements that should be included in the slicer.
  • Level: When working with OLAP or Tabular hierarchies, or regular SQL hierarchies and creating a slicer based on a regular hierarchy, select this option to specify a particular level of the given hierarchy.
  • Lists: Choose this option use a custom list as the slicer.

Type

The Type settings let you change the slicer's title and type:

  • Title: Edit the slicer title.
  • Type: Select a slicer type from the drop-down menu. Note: The Search Type panel is hidden if you select a slicer type that does not incorporate a search facility.
  • Columns: (Buttons only.) If your slicer type incorporates buttons, select the number of columns of buttons that should be added to the presentation.

Load Time

The load time determines which of the slicer's elements are automatically loaded when the report is opened:

Initial Selection Mechanism

The initial selection mechanism determines which slice will be automatically loaded when the user opens the report.

  • Saved Selection by Name: Select the initial slicer selection by name; this slice will be selected by default whenever the presentation is opened. Select the slice from the Initial Selections window.
  • Saved Selection by Position: Select the initial slicer selection by position; this slicer will be selected by default whenever the presentation is opened. This is useful if the slicer is based on a custom calculation that shows, for example, the top 10 products. You might want to automatically load the top selling product. In this case, the slicer position needs to be saved. Select the slice from the Initial Selections window.
  • First Member: Automatically select the first member in the slicer whenever the presentation is opened.
  • Last Member: Automatically select the last member in the slicer whenever the presentation is opened.

Other Settings

From the Other Settings tab, you can create some general settings:

Slicer Elements Limit

Set the maximum number of slicer elements to include in the slicer. The limit set here cannot exceed the limit set from the user settings.

Disabling

The disabling options relate to the filter associated with the slicer. By default, the filter is enabled and can be used to enable and disable the slicer. The following image shows a Product slicer in a presentation in its default state at runtime; the filter is highlighted using a green arrow:

Hide disable button

Select the Hide disable button checkbox to hide the filter entirely. In this case, the filter will not be shown on the presentation and, therefore, cannot be used to enable and disable the slicer:

Disable

Select the Disable checkbox to make this filter disabled (rather than enabled) by default. The option only changes the default state of the filter (orange arrow), the user can still enable the filter at runtime if they want to.

Pre-query slicer

Select the Pre-query slicer checkbox to indicate that the dashboard query should not be run until the user specifies their slicer selections. For more information, see Pre-Query Slicers (Present).

Search Type

Set the search type. This will be applied to any slicer type that supports search (drop-down, text box, and tree).

Add Interactions

From the Home or Slide ribbon, select Add Interactions or Auto Interact to add interactions between the slicer and the visuals. To add the slicer to multiple slide, you can simply copy and paste it.

  • Click here to learn about interactions.
